WINGS, May. Come Out Comix.
(Oakland, CA): Wings, 1977. First edition. (Later printing?). 22.3cm by 17.2cm. 31 pages. Seminal lesbian underground comic by pioneering queer cartoonist Mary Wings, widely regarded as the first comic book created entirely by and about lesbians. Originally conceived in response to the absence of authentic lesbian representation within both mainstream and underground comics, Come Out Comix presents an autobiographical coming-out narrative rendered with candor, humor, and political directness characteristic of 1970s feminist self-publishing. Distributed primarily through feminist bookstores, women’s centers, and alternative press networks, the comic rapidly achieved landmark status within lesbian and underground print culture. By the later 1970s multiple printings had appeared, reflecting the work’s importance and continued circulation within queer communities. The present issue, carrying a 1977 copyright notice, represents one of the early post-first-edition printings produced during the formative years of lesbian independent publishing. A very good copy in stapled wrappers with $1 cover price. Later price sticker to cover.
