WINGS, Mary. Dyke Shorts.

(Oakland, CA): Wings, 1978. First edition. Softcover. 25.4cm by 17.8cm. 29 pages. Rare and important lesbian underground comix collection by pioneering queer cartoonist Mary Wings, issued five years after her landmark Come Out Comix (1973), widely regarded as the first lesbian comic book. This volume presents a series of autobiographical and semi-autobiographical comic narratives dealing frankly and humorously with coming out, relationships, work, artificial insemination, lesbian identity, and everyday life within queer communities during the 1970s. The work forms part of the foundational corpus of lesbian and feminist underground comix alongside publications such as Wimmen’s Comix, Gay Comix, and Tits & Clits. Wings’ direct, personal approach and unapologetically lesbian perspective helped establish queer autobiographical comics as a distinct genre within underground publishing. Wings went onto author a number of lesbian detective novels, including ‘She Came to the Castro’, ‘She Came by the Book’, ‘She Came in a Flash’, and ‘Divine Victim A very good copy in stapled wrappers.
