(SOLD): VANDEBRUG, Joost. Bruce Lee Regele Canalelor.
(No place): Seeds Foundation / Joost Vanderbrug, 2014. First edition. Softcover. 25 by 19cm. Unpaginated. Scarce photobook documenting the life of Florin Hora, known as Bruce Lee, the charismatic leader of one of Bucharest’s underground tunnel communities. Developed from Joost Vandebrug’s long-term photographic work amongst the homeless adults and children living beneath the Romanian capital, the volume shifts the focus from Nicu, the young protagonist of The Lost Boys, to the man who governed much of life within the tunnels. Painted silver and regarded with a mixture of fear and respect, Bruce Lee maintained a remarkable degree of order amongst the community, providing heat, sleeping quarters, electricity and even hot water within the labyrinth of disused service tunnels, while simultaneously exercising authority through his involvement in the criminal economy that sustained life underground. This is a rare and intimate portrait of one of the most enigmatic figures to emerge from post-Communist Romania’s underground communities and forms an important companion to Vandebrug’s wider body of work documenting Bucharest’s forgotten children. A very good copy in wrappers. Scarce, no copies located on WorldCat.
