SMITH, Joel. Please Send to Real Life: : Ray Johnson Photographs.

(London / New York): Mack Books, 2022.  First edition.  Hardcover.  24cm by 17cm.  245 pages. Authoritative volume published to accompany the Morgan Library & Museum’s exhibition (June 17–October 2, 2022) and represents a major posthumous presentation of Ray Johnson’s otherwise unseen late photographs. Between 1992 and 1994, Johnson used 137 disposable cameras to generate his final body of work—carefully staged tableaux incorporating his “Movie Stars” collage designs in suburban Long Island settings. The images blend found scenes with jokes, cultural figures, and his signature bunny iconography.  Edited by the exhibition’s curator Joel Smith, the book features a substantial essay framing Johnson’s shift from mail art and collage into photography, supplemented by a curated selection of approximately 3,000 color prints discovered after his death in 1995.  A very good copy in photo-illustrated boards.
