(SOLD): SEUNG-WOO, Yang. Outlaw Life: Daruma-san fell.
(Japan): Self-published, no date (c.2004). First edition. Softcover. 29.5cm by 21cm. The photographer’s second book, unrecorded and previously unknown. Presumably issued in just a handful of copies to accompany Seung-woo’s exhibition “Daruma-san fell” Ginza Nikon Salon, 2006. The volume is a compelling documentation of the inhabitants of the Kotobukicho district of Yokohama, the dark underbelly of Japan: The poor, the drunk, and the destitute. The work offers a raw, humanistic, and often unsettling depiction of life on society’s edges. The work is high-contrast, emotionally direct, and composed with a documentary sensibility, laying the groundwork for his ungoing documentation marginalized individuals, nightlife, crime, and displacement. This is a very good copy in photoillustrated wrappers. Rare, with no google reference.
