PETERSEN, Anders. Cafe Lehmitz.
(Tokyo): Rat Hole, 2007. First Japanese edition. Hardcover. 21.6cm by 15.4cm. Unpaginated. Afterword by Mariko Takeuchi. Text in English. An elegant but edited down edition of this seminal photobook which documents the late-1960s nightlife at the bar Café Lehmitz on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg — a meeting point for sex workers, transvestites, drunks, pimps, petty criminals, and working-class regulars. Petersen spent years photographing the bar’s “regulars,” producing a raw, empathetic, and intimate portrait of a marginalized social world. This a very good copy in boards with silver lettering. This the special edition one of fifty copies issued with an original print housed in an separate slipcase. The print measures 17.2cm by 11.8cm, signed by Peterson and numbered 4/5 (there were a total of ten prints issued in editions of five). The print, with small stain on verso, is housed in an envelope bound into a matching binding.
