PARR, Martin. Prestwich Mental Hospital 1972.
(No place): Cafe Royal Books, 2018. First edition. Softcover. 20.1cm by 14cm. [36]-pages. One of Parr’s earliest photographic works, created while he was still a student at Manchester Polytechnic. In this project, Parr documents the daily life inside Prestwich Mental Hospital, located in Greater Manchester—a now-closed psychiatric institution. Shot in black and white, the images are raw, observational, and empathetic, offering a rare glimpse into the institutional spaces and routines of mental health care in early 1970s Britain. Unlike the saturated color and satirical tone of Parr’s later work, these photographs are quiet and restrained, showing patients and staff in communal areas, sparsely furnished rooms, and corridors that reflect the isolating and often neglected atmosphere of such facilities. A very good copy in stapled wrappers. Published in an edition of 500 copies.
