PARKER, Fan. Lewis Carroll in Russia: Translations of Alice in Wonderland 1879 – 1989.
(New York, NY): Russian House Ltd., 1994. First edition. Softcover. 21.5 by 14cm. [7], 89 pages. An illustrated bibliographical study of the Russian translations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, examining eleven versions published between 1879 and 1989. Parker traces the history of the book’s reception and translation in Russia, comparing the different Russian renderings of Carroll’s text and discussing the translators and their approaches. Of particular interest is the treatment of Vladimir Nabokov’s Russian translation, Ania v strane chudes, alongside the later translations by Nina Demurova, Boris Zakhoder and others. An uncommon and useful contribution to the bibliography and translation history of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. A very good copy in printed wrappers.
