ORIHARA, Kei. Jana: The New York Girl.

(Tokyo): Shurisha, 1983.  First edition.  Octavo.  153 pages.  Fascinating work by Japanese photographer, Orihara, who lived in New York from 1979-1981.  During that time she documented the life of Jana, a New York lady with whom she became friends.  The photographs of Jana’s everyday life were exhibited in Japan in 1982, and turned into a feature within the Japanese edition of Playboy.  The book is notable both for being a woman’s portrait of a woman, and for Orihara’s free discussion in the texts of her perceptions of the differences and similarities between her model and herself.  A near fine copy in dust jacket with the scarce obi.  Rare, OCLC locates a single copy in Tokyo, and virtually unfindable en commerce.
