MARQUEZ, Gabriel Garcia. El Otono del Patriarca.

(Barcelona): Plaza & Janes, S.A., 1975. First edition. Hardcover. 19.8cm by 13.2cm. 271 pages. The author’s sixth novel, and one of the central works of Latin American “Boom” literature, by Gabriel García Márquez. A dense and stylistically daring meditation on power, solitude, and tyranny, the novel presents the fragmented inner life of a Caribbean dictator through long, flowing sentences and shifting narrative voices. Written in the aftermath of the success of Cien años de soledad, (One Hundred Years of Solitude) the work marks a significant evolution in García Márquez’s prose style, abandoning conventional structure in favour of a more experimental, almost incantatory form. It stands alongside the great “dictator novels” of the 20th century, engaging with themes also explored by contemporaries such as Alejo Carpentier and Augusto Roa Bastos. A very good copy in dust jacket. A nice copy of the true first edition of this title.
