Superb edition of Machado’s acclaimed satric novella which was originally published in parts Rio de Janeiro’s newspaper A Estação (from 15 October 1881 to 15 March 1882). The volume is illustrated with four etchings and 36 ink drawings by Portinari. Widely regarded as the greatest writer of Brazilian literature, nevertheless he did not gain widespread popularity outside Brazil in his own lifetime. It wasnt until 1963 that the work was published in English and later was adapted into the comedy film The Alienist. This one of four hundred numbered copies on goatskin parchment in hessian binding with inset title plate. This example inscribed by the publisher on the half-title.
