LARRY. Police, Politicians, Policy, Politeness.
(No place): The artist, 2025. First edition. Hardcover. 24.2 × 18.2 cm. Unpaginated. A striking and conceptually charged project by an artist identified only as Larry. Produced in an edition of just four copies, each volume comprises a unique zine—presumably corresponding to one of the four titles Police, Politicians, Policy, or Politeness—that has been encased in plaster. To access the contents the viewer is explicitly invited to “break in with the hammer; direct action, violence. The broken stone. The title is revealed. Losing its integrity.” The work is inspired by the essay “Another Art World” by Nika Dubrovsky and David Graeber, who argue that the contemporary art world is dominated by market structures and elite institutions that render art a scarce and prestigious commodity. In contrast, they foreground traditions in which creativity is communal, ordinary, and embedded in social life—where action itself (collective gestures, interventions, and direct engagements) can constitute art, liberating creativity from objects and ownership. Their vision proposes a cooperative, participatory cultural ecology in which value arises from relationships and shared invention rather than from prestige or institutional authority. This object is a provocative and materially literal response to these ideas. This is an unbroken example, (we know at least one example has been broken). Rare. .
