KIVLAND, Sharon. J’Appelle un Chat un Chat.

(London): Book Works, 1994. First edition. Small square quarto. Unpaginated. [34 pages]. Long interested in Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis many of the artist’s works have explored themes found therein. This volume contains extracts from Freud’s ‘Fragments of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria, (Dora)’, followed by the names, in French, for ten shades of lipstick. These names, including Flamboyant, Fou-rire and Imaginaire can also be read as states of emotions or female attributes. They are hand printed hand letterpressed in ten shades of red.   The volume is in very good condition, bound in black calfskin, housed in the publisher’s printed cloth box which also contains a circular photograph, of lips adorned with one of the lipstick shades, mounted under glass. A cool publication issued in an edition of just ten numbered copies signed by the artist.  Worldcat locates four of the ten examples, three in the U.S. and one in the U.K.
