HUGES, Bart. Homo Sapiens Correctus.

(Amsterdam): Bart Huges, [1964].  First edition.  Dutch language version of Huges infamous scroll in which he proposed that trepanation could be used to enhance brain functionality by balancing the proportion of blood and cerebral spinal fluid.  Huges theorized that by cutting a hole in the skull the pressure inside the head would be raised. This in turn, would squeeze out a portion of the brain’s cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), thus increasing what he termed “brainbloodvolume,” or the ratio of blood to CSF in the head.  Greater brainbloodvolume means more oxygen to the brain. More oxygen means more brainpower, more mental energy, and a faster cerebral metabolism.  Huges carried out his own trepanation in January of 1965, he claimed that by liberating his brain from its total imprisonment in his skull, he had restored its pulsations, increased the volume of blood in it and acquired a more complete, satisfying state of consciousness.  The medical and legal authorities reacted to Huges’ discovery with horror and rewarded him with a spell in a Dutch lunatic asylum.  The scroll is illustrated with ten drawings hand-coloured with red, yellow and blue felt pens, measuring approx. 286cm by 41.5cm is in good condition.  Small loss to top right corner otherwise a very nice example of this important work. Scarce OCLC locates just three examples worldwide.
