HOEK, Désirée van. Skid Row: Los Angeles 2007 – 2015.
(Amsterdam): Désirée van Hoek, 2015. First edition. Softcover. 36.5 by7 27.7cm. Unpaginated. Introduction by Gale Holland. A striking photographic portrait of Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles, documenting the neighbourhood and its inhabitants over six years, from 2007 to 2015. Former fashion photographer Désirée van Hoek focuses not only on the people living there but on their clothing, possessions, makeshift dwellings and the improvised structures of their environment. The photographs reveal a highly personal material culture amid extreme poverty, finding colour, ingenuity and individuality in circumstances of profound hardship. Illustrated throughout in colour including eight loose photographic plates inserted between the pages. A very good copy nominated for Best Dutch Book of the Year. Not stated but published in an edition of 732 copies.
