HEERESMA, Heere. A Day at the Beach.
(London): London Magazine Editions, 1967. First UK edition. Softcover. 18.3cm by 9.1cm. 117 pages. A translation (James Brockway) of Heeresma’s Dutch novella Een dagje naar het strand (1962), the work presents a stark and harrowing day-in-the-life narrative of Bernard, an alcoholic, and his ill‑fated attempt to give a young girl a “normal” day out. The narrative unfolds with both grim realism and dark compassion, capturing despair, vulnerability and fleeting human connections. The English edition appeared as number 10 in the new London Magazine Editions paperback series. A very good copy in printed wrappers.
