FUKUDA, Fumiaki. Where is ’69 Shinjuku Kaminari Zoku.

(Tokyo): Daikan Shokan, 1980.  First edition. Softcover.  26cm by 18.4cm.  256 pages. Rare and iconic photobook documenting the Kaminari-zoku (“Thunder Tribe”)—Japan’s pioneering motorcycle gang that roamed Tokyo’s Shinjuku district in the late 1960s. The gritty black and white images  presents a compelling visual narrative, showcasing the customized motorcycles, street gatherings, and the defiant attitude that characterized the Kaminari-zoku. Fukuda’s lens brings to life the tension between post-war societal norms and the emerging countercultural movements that would later influence the more flamboyant bosozoku gangs of the 1970s and 1980s.  A very good copy in card covers with glossy dust jacket and rare obi.  One of the best volumes documentating the Japanese biker gangs.
