FLEISS, Elein and Olivier ZAHM. Purple Prose: Issues 1-10.

(Paris): Association Belle Haleine, 1992–1996. First edition. Various sizes and paginations. A complete run of the first ten issues of Purple Prose, the seminal publication founded by Elein Fleiss and Olivier Zahm in 1992. Conceived as a hybrid between artists’ magazine, critical journal, and fanzine, and specifically as reaction against the superficial glamour of the 1980s, Purple Prose emerged from the milieu of contemporary art but rapidly became one of the defining platforms for the anti-fashion and independent photographic culture of the 1990s. Under the editorial direction of Fleiss and Zahm, the magazine brought together artists, writers, photographers, musicians, designers, and filmmakers in a deliberately non-hierarchical format that challenged conventional distinctions between contemporary art, fashion, and popular culture. The first ten issues encompass the publication’s formative years, including such landmark numbers as L’Été Indien, Rêver, Multiple Personality Disorder, Post Sexe, Violet Violence, Sports, Japan, Independents, and Normal Explosion. Widely regarded as one of the most influential independent magazines of the 1990s, Purple Prose helped establish the visual and editorial language later associated with Purple, Purple Fashion, and a generation of contemporary fashion and art publishing. Its embrace of documentary realism, experimental graphic design, and artist-led fashion imagery proved highly influential on subsequent magazine culture. All issues in at least very good condition, the first eight issues in stapled wrappers, issues nine and ten perfect bound.
