De VINNIE, Theodore Low. Title-Pages as Seen by a Printer With Numerous Illustrations in Facsimile and Some Observations on the Early and Recent Printing of Books

(New York, NY): The Grolier Club, 1901.  First edition.  Octavo.  A short history of printing with an analysis of various title pages dating from the beginning of printing to the turn of the 20th century. The author was one of America’s leading typographers and printers and a founding member of the Grolier Club. The book is illustrated with numerous title page facsimiles.  One of 325 copies printed by the De Vinne Press from Rimmer types on Italian handmade paper.  A very good copy in half dark red morocco gilt with grey printed paper-covered boards.  Housed in publisher’s slipcase.  Slipcase is in poor condition lacking top edge with wear to remaining edges.  This example with a letter from the author to Charles Walker Andrews tipped-in, additionally with the ex-libris bookplate of the bibliophile/collector Charles Walker Andrews, a Grolier Club member from 1902 to 1938, to the front pastedown.
