De KEYSER, Carl. God Inc., I and II.

(Tielt, Belgium): Lannoo, 2020. First edition. Hardcover. 31 × 26cm. 320 pages. Text in English. Essays by Johan Braeckman. Designed as a reversible volume with two front covers, bringing together the original God Inc. (1992), expanded with previously unpublished photographs, and the entirely new God Inc. II. Published to accompany the exhibition at the Sint-Pieters Abbey, Ghent, in 2020. The volume unites photographs made during two extended journeys through the United States, thirty years apart. In 1990–91, De Keyser travelled across America in a camper van documenting the extraordinary diversity of the country’s religious communities, from evangelical megachurches and Pentecostal revivals to Mormon gatherings, televangelists, and roadside ministries. Revisiting many of the same regions three decades later, God Inc. II examines how faith has adapted to the digital age, revealing both profound social change and the remarkable continuity of religious ritual and spectacle. The juxtaposition of the two series offers a compelling visual meditation on belief, identity, and the enduring role of religion in American public life. A very good copy in photo-illustrated boards with obi.
