Published to coincide with exhibitions at the MIT List Centre, Miami Art Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1998 and 1999.  The volume explores specific aspects of the relationship between historic and contemporary work in the context of Surrealism. The contributors re-examine art historical assumptions about gender, identity, and intergenerational legacies within modernist and postmodernist frameworks.  The volume illustrates work by Claude Cahun, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, and Francesca Woodman amongst others.  A very good copy in wrappers with  integral flaps.
