BURROWS, Adrienne and Iwan SCHUMACHER. Portraits of the Insane: The Case of Dr. Diamond.
(London): Quartet Books, 1990. First edition. Hardcover. 30.5cm by 22cm. 155 pages. book brings together some of the most remarkable photographs taken in the nineteenth century. They are the work of Dr. Hugh Welch Diamond, a psychiatrist at Springfield Hospital, the former Surrey County Lunatic Asylum, and of an otherwise unknown photographer, Henry Hering, during the 1850s. As doctor and photographer, Diamond embodied the new humanitarianism and scientific observation of the age which together made for a growing awareness of the connection between a patient’s disturbed mind and body. A very good copy in dust jacket.
