The first title in The Independent newspaper’s “Banned Books” series of 25 literary classics, specially published for Independent readers and issued in limited numbers, with the first title given away free with the newspaper on 24 February 2007. The series presented works that had been banned, censored, suppressed, expurgated or otherwise restricted, celebrating their survival as a triumph of independent thought. This edition includes a new introduction by John Walsh and a glossary of the Nadsat slang used by Alex and his fellow droogs. Burgess’s dystopian novel, originally published by William Heinemann in 1962, follows the teenage Alex and his gang through a world of violence, state control and behavioural conditioning, and examines free will, morality and the nature of choice.
