Van BEIRENDONCK, Walter. Cut the World Awake.
( Lichtervelde, Belgium): Hannibal Books, 2024. First edition. Hardcover. 34.6 by 24.8cm. 175 pages. An exuberant survey of the collages and cut-outs of Walter Van Beirendonck, one of the legendary Antwerp Six fashion designers. Drawing on material from his private archive, the book presents more than one hundred previously unpublished colour collages, spanning works dating from the 1990s through to montages that served as starting points for his more recent collections. The collages reveal Van Beirendonck’s distinctive visual vocabulary of appropriation, juxtaposition, sexuality, popular culture and surreal imagery, demonstrating the importance of collage as a preliminary and generative stage in his fashion practice. The volume includes an extensive new interview with Van Beirendonck and a conversation between the designer and his long-time hero, the American artist Paul McCarthy. A very good copy in cushioned boards with die-cut cover and two interchangeable images. This example inscribed by Walter “Kiss The Future!” Scarce thus.
