BEDOUIN, J.L. Noir d’Ivoire.

(Lausanne, Switzerland): La Guilde du Livre, 1950. First edition. Softcover. 28 × 22 cm. Unpaginated. Illustrated throughout with full-page photogravures after photographs by Michel Huet. A striking collaboration between the Surrealist writer and critic Jean-Louis Bédouin and the photographer Michel Huet, whose powerful photogravures record the peoples and landscapes of French Equatorial Africa. Bédouin’s poetic introductory text avoids the conventional colonial travel narrative, instead presenting Huet’s images as an exploration of the dignity, beauty and individuality of their subjects. A very good copy in card covers with paper jacket. Rubbed along edges with some wear at spine head.
