HERNANDEZ, Anthony. Landscapes for the Homeless.
(Hannover): Sprengel Museum, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. 24.8 × 24.8cm. 88 pages. Illustrated with 49 colour plates and one black-and-white illustration. Text in English and German. Includes a transcribed conversation with Lewis Baltz, together with a biography, exhibition history, and bibliography. Published on the occasion of Hernandez’s exhibition at the Sprengel Museum following his receipt of the DG Bank Förderpreis für Fotografie. A landmark in contemporary American photography, documenting the improvised encampments and abandoned possessions of Los Angeles’ homeless population during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Rather than photographing individuals, Hernandez records the traces of their presence—discarded clothing, flattened cardboard, makeshift shelters, and other fragile interventions within the urban landscape. The volume is cited in Parr and Badger’s The Photobook: A History, Volume III, where it is recognised as one of the significant photobooks of the period. A near fine copy in dust jacket. This example signed by the photographer.
