Watts, the volume presents Watts exploration of the meeting point between Western psychotherapy (psychoanalysis, psychology) and Eastern spiritual traditions (Buddhism, Taoism, Vedānta, Yoga). Watts argues that where Western therapy attempts to repair and strengthen the ego within social norms, Eastern traditions often aim to transcend the ego entirely, seeking a direct experience of reality beyond self-object duality. The volume brings together a rich range of references — more than two hundred cited works — placing Eastern and Western sources into revealing dialogue.
