RUITER, Marita and Lucien KAYSER. Ulay: Luxemburger Portraits.
(Luxemberg): Editions Clairefontaine, 1997. First edition. Hardcover. 28.5cm by 21.7cm. 144 pages. A striking portrait collection by the noted artist Ulay, this book captures the people of Luxembourg through two distinct time periods, offering a dialogue between past and present. Originally in 1972, Ulay used large‐format Polaroid cameras to create life‐size portraits of residents in Luxembourg. Twenty‑five years later, in 1997, curator and gallery owner Marita Ruiter re‑commissioned the project. With many of the original prints lost and only a handful of original sitters traceable, Ulay produced new portraits of 55 Luxembourgers, complementing what remained of the 1972 series. The volume is illustrated throughout with full‑page photographic plates, mostly in the large Polaroid format that emphasize presence, scale and identity. A very good copy in dust jacket.
