ONYEAMA, Dillibe. Nigger at Eton.
(London): Sattelite Books, 1977. First paperback edition. Softcover. 18.4cm by 12cm. 239 pages. Haunting memoir of Dillibe Onyeama’s years at Eton College (1965‑1969), recounting experiences of racism, exclusion, school culture and identity. As the first Black student to complete his studies at Eton, Onyeama provides a raw and unflinching narrative of daily humiliations, verbal abuse, stereotyping, and his struggle for self‐respect and dignity in an elite, largely white, institution. The text mixes evocative scenes of school life, reflections on race and class, and personal voice. On publication the book caused a furore in the UK and Onyeama was subsequently banned from visiting the prestigious school. In 2020, Eton College’s headmaster Simon Henderson publicly apologised for the racist treatment Onyeama experienced. This is a good copy in illustrated wrappers, showing some wear and creasing. Scarce.
