KASAI, Kanji. External Genatalia of Japanese Women.
(Tokyo): Free Press, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. 26.3cm by 18.7cm. 414 pages. A detailed and rare anatomical study focusing on the external genitalia of Japanese women, combining medical illustration and ethnographic observation alongside numerous photographic illustrations. The volume, produced by Kasai, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Shiga Medical College, was the subject of significant controversy and legal action when several women alleged that the photographs were taken without their consent during pelvic examinations at the college hospital. These women expressed concerns that their genitalia had been photographed without their knowledge or permission. An investigative committee at Shiga Medical College concluded that Kasai had indeed measured and photographed patients’ external genitalia without their consent and subsequently published the data. Although Kasai claimed that the photographs used in the book were taken outside the college hospital and with the women’s consent, the committee found otherwise. However, the Shiga Medical College merely issued a letter of reprimand and accepted Kasai’s voluntary resignation. The college did not pursue further disciplinary actions, and Kasai continued to publish articles on the subject in popular men’s magazines. While there is no official record of a government-mandated ban, the book was effectively withdrawn from sale due to the public outcry and ethical concerns surrounding its content. This is a near fine copy in illustrated boards with obi, housed in publisher’s printed card box.
