HUGUES, Clovis. Ode au Vagin. Poème inédit.

(Domrémy, France): A l’Enseigne de la Pucelle, C.1933.  [Paris, Maurice Duflou].  First edition.  Hardcover.  22.1cm by 17cm.  69 pages.  Includes a biographical note on Clovis Hugues by Jean Tiretta, as well as a facsimile of the final page of the manuscript signed “Klau-Vizuq”. A posthumous publication of Clovis Hugues’s boldly erotic verse, written in 1906 but first printed here in a clandestine edition by Maurice Duflou. The primary text, Ode au Vagin, is an exuberant and lyrical celebration of female sexuality, mixing mock-classical tones with ribald imagery. It is followed by a shorter piece, Ode à Priape, which complements the first poem with a satirical homage to the phallic god of fertility from Roman mythology. The volume is beautifully illustrated 10 hand-colored erotic lithographs unsigned but attributed to an anonymous artist working under Duflou’s direction. This is a very good copy in orange half cloth.  Some staining to two textual pages.  Published in an edition of 300 numbered copies printed on Vélin.
