(SOLD): WHALEN, Philip. Winning his Way, or, The Rise of William Johnson: A Diverting History for the Instruction & Improvement of the Breed : Dedicated to Irving Rosenthal.

(San Francisco): Philp Whalen, 1983.  First edition.  Octavo.  Unpaginated. [52 pages]. Recto printing only.  Rare first printing of this short tale of a young gay Yale graduate.  Commissioned by Irving Rosenthal in 1967, “a homo erotic book of text and drawings guaranteed to suit my most extravagant fancies”,  the work was completed but not officially published until 1983 and even then only distributed haphazardly.  Illustrated with drawings reproduced from Whalen’s holograph ms.  A very good copy in thin card covers with colour illustration to the front cover.  A nice copy of this rare work.
