(Sold): TYTHACOTT, Louise. Kinyozi: The Art of African Hairstyles.
(Brighton, Sussex): The Green Centre for non-Western art and culture, 1994. First edition. Oblong quarto. 59 pages. Introduction by Jeremy Coote. Cool catalogue for an exhibition, held at the Cultures Gallery, Brighton Museum, of African hairdresser signs. The examples here all originate from Nairobi. The boards are painted by those who don’t necessarily consider themselves artists in the Western sense, but design and paint these boards as a way to earn money to survive, a graphic, extroverted street art, intended to advertise and entice. A very good copy in wrappers with integral flaps.
