STEEL, David. Laurence Binyon and Lancaster.

(Lancaster): Lancaster City Museum, Lancaster Public Library and The University of Lancaster, 1979.  First edition.  Booklet published to accompany the exhibition at Lancaster Museum 28 April – 26 May, 1979.  54 pages.  Laid in is a letter on headed paper and dated 31 May, 1940 signed by Laurence Binyon and addressed to his cousin Mrs Margaret Paice.  Within the letter Binyon apologises for the delay in his reply, provides a recommendation for speech training, and advises that he was sent to Athens University to lecture there on English poetry, he also mentions briefly the war.  Binyon – too old to enlist, but volunteered as a medical orderly, he is best remembered for his poem For the Fallen, written just after the First World War and still read every Remembrance Sunday.  A very good copy of the booklet and a nice letter of good content written in the poets typically elegant hand with original handwritten addressed envelope.
