Smiler: [Photographs of London by Mark Cawson].

[London]: [Sorika], [2016].  Second edition.  Quarto.  Very scarce publication issued to coincide with the exhibition of Mark Cawson’s aka Smiler photographs at the ICA.  Cawson spent three decades documenting the underground life of London. With social and political changes of the 70s and the 80s, he, then a student, used to hang around the  squats to observe the life of common people as their everyday existence was put in transition. Capturing the community spirit, the faces, the anguish and the simple joys, he also documented the trends – music and art fashions. Emerging from the housing crisis, the cultural phenomenon depicted by Smiler  is a reminder of how breakthrough moments can happen at the least expected time.  A near fine copy in photo-illustrated wrappers with wrap-around hand band stamped by the artist.   Photographer’s stamp to rear cover and textual booklet laid-in.
