(SOLD): [KIMBROUGH, Thomas C.]. Beatnik Dictionary: The Official Handbook for Everyone in Orbit.
(Peoria, IL): Publishers Moderna, INC., no date (c.1959). First edition. 12mo. Unpaginated. Cool, and early dictionary of hipster slang. A brief introduction states that the volume is not an exhaustive list of ‘cool’ terms but is intended to give a better understanding of ‘Jazz’ and ‘Beat’ talk. The volume is illustrated with some cartoon like drawings to highlight some of the hip terms. The contents of the volume, save for the title-page, are identical to Swinging Syllables, it is unclear which edition proceeds although this volume was priced at 50c and Swinging Syllables was advertised at a George Washington ($1) so it is possible that this is the correct first and that the title was changed to increase sales (it is unlikely that there were many Beatniks in Peoria in 1959). Indeed this edition appears far scarcer with no copies located in Worldcat whilst five copies of Swinging Syllables are located. A good copy with wrapper worn and rubbed along edges and at the spine.
