HOLDT, Jacob. American Pictures. Amerikaanse indrukken: Een persoonlijke reis door het zwarte Amerika.

(Amsterdam): Uitgeverij Kosmos. 1979.  First Dutch edition.  Softcover.  24.25cm by 20.25cm. 272 pages.  Danish hitch-hiker Holdt arrived in the U.S. with only $40, He ended up staying  for more than five years, criss-crossing the country by hitchhiking taking thousands of photographs as he did so.  Holdt was shocked and fascinated by the social differences he encountered, and his powerful photographs depict this and are particularly revealing about the hardships of America’s lower classes. Taking more than 15,000 photographs with a cheap pocket camera, Holdt sold blood plasma twice a week to buy film. He stayed with people who were often so poor they ate cat food and dirt and who lived in rat-infested shacks. A hard hitting work.   A very good copy in wrappers with integral flaps.
