FRANK, Robert. Les Americans.
(Paris): Delpire, [1958]. First edition. Small oblong quarto. 172 pages. The correct first printing, of Frank’s masterpiece, one of the most renowned photo-books. The 83 black and white images, accompanied by texts gathered by Alain Bosquet, take you on a wild cross-country ride across quintessential America of the mid 1950s. As a whole the volume creates a complicated, and yet unsurpassed, visual portrait of the period that was viewed as sceptical of contemporary values and evocative of ubiquitous loneliness. This a very good copy in boards illustrated by Saul Steinberg. This copy carries the usually toning to edges and spine, but is otherwise a nice, tight copy, with sharp corners. A very presentable copy of this classic work.
