FLYNT, Henry. The Samo Graffiti.
(New York, NY): Emily Harvey Gallery, 1991. First edition. Scarce invite card for the exhibition at the Emily Harvey Gallery, March 8 – April 13, 1991. Flynt began photographing the ‘Samo’ graffiti tag that began appearing on the streets of Manhattan in the late 70s. Primarily associated with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, the spray painted tag was actually developed as a collaboration between Basquiat and Al Diaz. It accompanied, short phrases, which were poetic and satirical advertising slogans. Basquiat eventually used the tag himself, creating some non-graffiti work on paper and canvas using that tag, just before and after killing off the SAMO graffiti by painting “SAMO© IS DEAD” around the streets of downtown. Decades later, Diaz resurrected the SAMO tag. The card measuring 8cm by 13cm is in very good condition.
