(SOLD): di PRIMA, Diane. Monuments.

(New York, NY):Café Cino, [1968].  First edition.  Single A4 sheet.  Rare flyer for the performance of Monuments, 8 Monologues by Diane di Prima and directed by James Waring.  This was one of the last works performed at the important theatre Café Cino, (5-17 March, 1968), which was established in Greenwich Village in 1958 and where off-off Broadway began.  The play consisted of eight monologues, three of which were performed each night.  Like di Prima’s other plays the texts were highly lyrical, surreal, and sometimes comic, juxtaposing the sacred and the profane, sublime and quotidian in equal measure.  The play caught the mood of the late 60’s in which deep spiritual longings were often suffused with giddy innocence.  Performers included Lee Fitzgerald, Debbie Lee, Eddie Barton and others.  Flyer measures approx. 28cm by 22cm and is decorated with a photomontage and illustrated edges.  A good copy with some light discolouration and creasing where once folded.
