(Tokyo): Bokusui-Sha, 1980.  First edition.  Small quarto.  47 pages.  Scarce volume of Akiyama’s interesting, insightful colour images of New York in the late 1970s.  Echoes of Eggleston, Friedlander, Levitt, Shore and Winogrand reverberate through the pages of Akiyama’s book, which feature a compendium of meticulously composed street photography; some are loud and visually dense, while others are contemplative and sparse. Yet all these images evidence Akiyama’s keen eye for how colour, light, composition and timing can make brilliant the mundane and represent the grandiose with a single, poignant detail.  A very good copy in black boards and silver lettering and tipped-in full colour plate.
